Teachers Day is celebrated on 5th September in reminiscence of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan—the first vice president and also the second president of India. He was well-known for his wise and affectionate behavior. He helped numerous people to gain knowledge and learn things. His students suggested that his birthday should be celebrated to honor him i.e. on the 5th of September every year. But Dr. Radhakrishnan insisted that his birthday should be celebrated as teacher’s day. He wanted to show his respect toward every mentor who helps students in their growth. From 1962 to now, this day is celebrated as teacher’s day each year since he took the post of president.

Who was Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan?

In the 20th century, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was regarded as among the most notable scholars of that time. He was a very influential personality who made India and the west understand the accurate meaning of Hinduism. He was a Bharat Ratna recipient in 1954 which is the highest civilian honor. He was often called a bridge-builder between the two nations. Before becoming the second president of India, he served as a vice-president of the country between 1952 to 1962. He was also the 4th Vice-chancellor of BHU (Banaras Hindu University) between 1939 to 1948 and in the years 1949 to 1952 he was the 2nd ambassador of India to the Soviet Union.

  • As a student, he received many scholarships. After completing his Master’s degree in philosophy he became a professor.
  • After marrying Sivakamu, he had a son and 5 daughters.

  • In 1931 before the Indian independence, Dr. Radhakrishnan was awarded a knighthood and addressed as Sir Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. After 1947 when India gained independence, he was known as Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
  • Dr. Radhakrishnan was elected to the Indian Constituent Assembly.
  • He was awarded the Fellowship which is the highest honor for any writer by the Sahitya Akademi.
